And now for our Studio Selfie, featuring one of the artists included in the Pay It Forward show, Terry Strickland. Terry is a lady of many talents who currently resides in Alabama. After completing her degree in Graphic Design, she began a varied career which included work in the imprinted sportswear, gaming and publishing industries as well as courtroom sketch artist before devoting herself to painting full time in 2005. A skilled figurative and still life painter whose work gleams with beautifully rendered color and light, Terry is best known for her unique approach to portraiture and most notably her award winning portrait series The Incognito Project (read more about it here). 10 Questions for the Artist: Terry Strickland
- Fill in the blank: Paint is sensual.
- Cats/Dogs? Cats
- Your first car: Doge Dart, old as the hills, as we say in the south. It was a gift from my grandfather. My dad towed it to my uncle’s auto shop. Everyone worked on it, got it running and gave it a spiffy new, metallic burgundy paint job. The speedometer never worked, once you turned the wipers on you had to turn off the engine to get them to turn off. The passenger door would fly open on corners even if it was locked…She was my pride and joy.
- Favorite painting music: I have several perfectly crafted Pandora stations. Adele, The Black Keyes, Florence and the Machine, Gotye.
- Your “spirit animal”: Red Fox – Because they are energetic, quick, thoughtful, mischievous and red haired.
- If you could time travel and witness an artist create their masterpiece, which work would you choose? John Waterhouse, Lady of Shalott
- All time favorite movie: I’m a huge movie fan, so I don’t really have a favorite but I do have one that is memorable. The first movie I ever remember seeing. Love Me Tender, Elvis, when I was about 6, the movie was at least 10 years old. I have a distinct memory of going to the drive-in, the heavy speakers attached to the door, the smell of the insect repellant oil burning and laying on the hood of the car watching Elvis sing to the girl on the big screen.
- Place you’d love to travel to: A months long Grand European Tour, old school style.
- Morning person or night owl? Morning
- If I weren’t an artist, I think I’d be a superhero!
