If you are an avid user of social media, you’ve no doubt heard of weekly Instagram hashtags like #ThrowbackThursday or #ManCrushMonday. If you haven’t, the idea is simple. Themed days of the week are fun ways to have a wide range of Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook users contribute photos to a common theme such as Throwback Thursday, which celebrates the nostalgia of old photos, old hairdos, old song lyrics, etc.
Principle Gallery is starting our own social media trend, as of today! Each Saturday, we’ll be bringing you #StudioSelfieSaturday posts, featuring self portrait snapshots of our incredible artists in their studios.
Today’s selfie-within-a-selfie comes from Mia Bergeron. Here’s a little info about Mia:
Growing up in New York City with two graphic designers for parents, Mia was always drawn to bold shapes and colors. Emphasis on patterns and design were household commonalities. However, in her early 20’s during the time she spent in Italy, she began to become more fluent in the subtleties that the figure, as a subject, presented. By studying the classical discipline of painting figures and people, she began to notice the curious transformation that figurative art has taken over the centuries.
Having left Italy four years ago, Mia has steadily been working to fuse both her fascination for bold color and design with the subtleties presented in fine figurative painting. Mia has been influenced by many different artists, including John Singer Sargent, Diego Velasquez and Anders Zorn. Most recently, she has been studying the work of Alex Kanevsky, Tony Sherman, and other artists who ride the line of both figurative and abstract work.
Mia teaches private workshops, one-on-one tutoring, and has just finished being an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga
