Socialist Realism recognizes its earliest roots in the formation of Bolshevik rule in October of 1917. The art world was impacted immediately by a communist government that aimed to portray art as "communal in production, public in expression, and political in content" (Milner). Over the next decade non-objective art was filtered out of society to introduce a new socialist realist art which served to exalt Soviet Russia to the world and more importantly to the people of Russia. Socialist Realism included all forms of art and depicted the ideals and beauty of communal life; for example, workers "Celebrating the Harvest" or a narrative scene of a woman in the village museum displaying pictures of Lenin to the people as seen in "The Village Museum". Commercial galleries and artists suffered as a communist government abolished all artistic groups in 1932 and instituted the Union of Artists, a state-controlled organization whose purpose was propaganda and the glorification of the Soviet Union through narrative artwork.
